Current developments

Work on Loneliness is being led by our voluntary sector support organisation SPARK.

  • Loneliness has been identified as one of the key themes by the South Petherton Community Partnership (funded by Symphony). A Loneliness sub-group now meets regularly to make practical plans in the community including a recent village Christmas dinner for over 40 people.

  • Working with the Clinical Commissioning Group and Symphony to develop a South Somerset Wellbeing Directory, that will contain information about community groups and support available. It will be based on the successful Health Connections Mendip model.

  • A 'Talking CafĂ©' is being piloted in Yeovil, a monthly meet-up for people who are socially isolated providing an opportunity for individuals to meet new friends, gain confidence and also to be signposted to other groups and support. Whilst facilitated by SPARK staff a network of volunteers is being trained to support the work so that more cafes can be started across the District.

  • A 'tool kit' for town and parish councils who wish to address the issue of loneliness and wider health and wellbeing challenges within their communities is being developed. It will give practical advice and support on how to create a community partnership that works; how to identify priorities and get funding.
