Wherever possible, the first thing to do is to approach your
neighbour. Politely explain that you are being troubled by the
noise, ask them to stop or reduce the noise to an acceptable level
and keep a written record of your conversation. If the problem
continues, write to them explaining the effect that the noise is
having on you. Ask them to stop or reduce the noise and refer to
any previous conversations you may have had. Keep a copy of your
letter and start a diary of events that disturb you.
We have produced letter templates, which you may wish to
use.

Many disputes are best settled by people talking about the
problems and showing consideration for each other. This may be
assisted by use of a mediation service if available. The Citizens'
Advice Bureau can advise on the availability of local
services.
What happens if the noise continues?
If the noise continues you can make a complaint to the Environmental Protection Team and start to
complete a noise log sheet (MS
Word version) to record the noise you are
experiencing.
The noise log sheet will help the Council to decide
how to deal with the noise.
For neighbour noise, once you have registered a complaint with
us, we will give you access to be able to submit noise recordings
made on a smart phone using the Noise App
if you wish to do so. The Noise App can be download free of
charge.
